It helps readers understand how characters feel and the motivation behind their actions. The Text-to-Text, Text-to-Self, Text-to-World strategy helps students develop the habit of making these connections as they read. It sets a purpose for reading and keeps the reader focused.
Harvey and Goudvis caution that merely making connections is not sufficient. Debrief Students gain a deeper understanding of the text, of their classmates, and of the world around them when they have the opportunity to discuss their responses with peers. Choose three or four events that include the problem and solution.
These distinguishing characteristic are applicable, with variations, to fiction and nonfiction. Sometimes when we read, we are reminded of other texts we have read. The author has a specific purpose for including certain events. Explain that story mapping helps the reader become aware of literary elements in an organized way.
The easiest connection to teach is text-to-self. You would decide, of course, how the questions were actually asked with each reading, how much time should pass between readings, and so forth. An extension of this activity would be to have students draw the connections they find between a text and other ideas, events, or experiences. This distinction is important for those studying Literature. The use of this simple strategy on an ongoing basis will allow teachers to provide additional differentiated instruction and support to students who need additional instruction. Teaching comprehension to enhance understanding.
