It gave me a basic understanding of several areas, but the author undermines herself repeatedly. Now I will have a more informed lens as I read other books written in the context of Islamic nations, read the news, and interact with muslim friends. For example the part about women.
Overall, I was really underwhelmed by this book. Highly recommend this book to a This book provided a great overview of the Islamic faith.
It was sufficient, and that's about as much as I can say for it. Therefore, her attempt to distinguish completely ignores the facts on the ground. Also, the organization is terrible.
It's full of subjectivity, bias, wrong info, it's just terrible. It answered many questions I had and went above and beyond.
Instead, those sections are in the back. For instance, she says the jizya tax was never more than a nominal amount that was used to protect religious minority communities and that they must be protected once that tax is paid.
